Sometimes your tooth is too decayed damaged for a simple filling to treat. At Chantilly Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we offer inlays and onlays to help restore your smile to its fullest. Depending on your needs and the extent of your restoration, our dentist may recommend an inlay or onlay.
What are Inlays and Onlays?
Inlays or onlays can become necessary to restore the cusp or chewing surface of decayed or fractured teeth. Inlays are used for restorations between the cusps on the chewing surface of a tooth. Onlays are used for more advanced damage and cover at least one cusp or point on the surface of the tooth.
Gold traditionally has been used for inlays and onlays because of its ability to be molded onto the tooth in a way that ensures minimal chance of additional decay. However, advances are such that the same effect can now be had with porcelain materials, which are custom-made to match the exact color of the existing tooth. Our office uses a tooth-colored composite resin to repair your teeth seamlessly without the need for gold or other metals.
How do Inlays and Onlays Work?
An inlay or onlay procedure is done in two parts:
During the first session, we will numb your mouth with local anesthetic to make the procedure as comfortable and pain-free as possible. The decayed area will then be removed, and the tooth will be thoroughly cleaned, and any exposed pulp area is covered with filler. At this session, a mold will be taken of the tooth to create an exact fit, which will prevent further decay or fracture. When you return for the next appointment, we will have the inlay or onlay made from your mold, and it will be secured to the tooth.
