What is TMJ?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the hinge that connects your jawbone to your skull. TMJ disorders (known medically as temporomandibular disorder or TMD) cause pain in your jaw joints and surrounding muscles. The symptoms of TMJ include pain or tenderness in the jaw, pain in one or both of the joints, pain in or around the each, pain or difficulty when chewing, severe facial pain and locking of the joint when opening or closing the mouth.

What causes TMJ?
The cause of TMJ varies and can be difficult to determine. Common causes include arthritis, jaw injury, damage to the jaw joints, misaligned bite and clenching or grinding the teeth (bruxism). Most cases of TMJ can be treated through pain management, oral appliances and other non-surgical treatments.

How do you treat TMJ?
Our office offers TMJ oral appliances to minimize the pressure on the jaw joints and ease the strain on the surrounding muscles, reducing your symptoms. The most common TMJ oral appliance is a stabilization splint, also known as a bite guard or bite plate. Made from a hard acrylic resin, this appliance fits over the upper or lower teeth. The splint prevents contact between your teeth by repositioning your jaw. Splints are typically worn 24 hours a day.

We may recommend a night guard to reduce the effects of nighttime bruxism if you clench or grind your teeth. Special oral appliances (called mandibular repositioning splints, or MORAs) can also be prescribed to realign your bite. Be sure to speak to our dentist to discuss your treatment options. We’ll perform a thorough exam to determine the best course of action based on your needs.
